THE HISTORY OF MERCEDES

The owner of the brand Mercedes-Benz is a German company Daimler AG, residing in Stuttgart. The company is one of most productive car-company in the world. Formerly, it was known as DaimlerChrysler AG and Daimler-Benz AG.

The production of the company Daimler AG is very diverse. They manufacture vehicules, buses, trucks or very luxurious and elegant limos Maybach. Except from the brand Mercedes-Benz, the total production of the company also contains these brands: AMG, Smart, Setra, Orion, Freightliner, Mitsubishi, Fuso, Detroit Diesel, Western Star, Sterling Trucks and Thomas Builot Buses. 
In the Czech republic, you can find the vending and distribution point of Mercedes-Benz in Prague 4.

How did Mercedes-Benz originate?

Mercedes-Benz was founded in 1926, when the former companies Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft merged with Benz & Cie.

The German company Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft (DMG) was founded in 1890. Its founders were Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. Firstly, the company focused on the production of combustion engines, but they switched to the vehicles. 
In 1896, the company was visited by austro-hungrian general consul and one of the most successful seller of vehicules of his time – Emil Jellinek. He demanded a very fast, sports car. The company fulfilled his requirement at the second try. This car became very popular among people. Jellinek named this car after his daughter – María de las Mercedes. Few years later, Emil Jellinek was elected as one of the member of the board of DMG and from 1902, all the new cars were called Mercedes. In 1926, the company was touched by the post-war economic crisis and was forced to merge with its competitor, Benz & Cie.

The company Benz & Cie was founded by Karl Friedrich Michael Benz (who changed his name to Carl Friedrich Benz). He manufactured the first petrol engine on the world. The company focused on the industrial engines.

In 1886, Karl Benz received a patent on his first three-wheel vehicle. In the same year, this vehicule came to the market under the name Benz Velo. But the massive selling of this car started few years later, because in the beginning, people didn´t trust to this new invention. The other news in the production was the four-wheel vehicle. Benz also invented the home phone or the press on tobacco.

But – as announced – in 1926, two important car companies, Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft and Benz & Cie merged. Together, they created a new company called Daimler-Benz AG and for their vehicles, the adopted the trademark Mercedes-Benz.

Mercedes-Benz has in its logo the triangular star (the sign of the earth, the water and the air) that was designed by Gottlieb Daimler. Around the star is the laurel wreath of Karl Benz.

The car enthusiasts can nowadays visit the company museum of Mercedes-Benz in Stuttgart. The visiters will meet the history of Mercedes and see some collector´s items.
